Perched on a rocky outcrop amid cypress trees, agaves and Mediterranean scrubland, the Sanctuary of Madonna di Monserrato is one of the most enchanting and evocative places on Elba Island. Built in 1606 by the Spanish governor José Pons y León as an ex voto offering to the Virgin of Montserrat, the sanctuary takes both its name and inspiration from the famous Catalan shrine. To this day, it retains a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere, making it a cherished destination for visitors and pilgrims alike.
