Founded in 2005, Roma Tre Orchestra is the first orchestral ensemble established within a public university in Rome. Comprising exclusively professional musicians, it is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Lazio Region and is dedicated to promoting classical music through concerts, educational projects and cultural initiatives in Italy and abroad.
The Association presents chamber and symphonic concerts at the venues of Roma Tre University, Teatro Palladium and prestigious cultural institutions across the city, including the Civic Museums of Rome and the Danish Academy. Over the years, it has collaborated with numerous internationally renowned soloists, conductors and leading figures from the arts and culture, including Gianluca Cascioli, Maurizio Baglini, Roberto Prosseda, Enrico Bronzi, Silvia Chiesa, Pavel Berman, Shirley Brill, Massimo Mercelli, Jacopo Taddei, Claudio Amendola, Bill T. Jones, Alessandro Baricco, Daniela Mazzucato, Veronika Dzhioeva, Etta Scollo and Oscar-winning composer Dario Marianelli, as well as conductors Gustav Kuhn, Donato Renzetti, Will Humburg, Sir David Willcocks, Jan Latham Koenig, Sergey Smbatyan, Francesco Lanzillotta, Marcello Bufalini and Marco Boni, among many others. The orchestra has also recorded Marianelli’s music for the films Nome di donna by Marco Tullio Giordana and Pinocchio by Matteo Garrone. Its former Music Directors include Pietro Mianiti (2006-2011) and Luigi Piovano (2013-2017), principal cello of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
Since 2017, Roma Tre Orchestra has supported emerging talent through the Young Artists Piano Solo Series, dedicated to outstanding young Italian pianists, many of them making their Rome debut, including Giovanni Bertolazzi, Davide Ranaldi, Gabriele Strata, Michelle Candotti, Leonardo Pierdomenico, Elia Cecino and Jonathan Ferrucci. Each year, the orchestra’s members select the Young Artist of the Year, who is subsequently invited to take part in further projects, including symphonic performances.
The orchestra has collaborated with numerous Italian public and cultural institutions, including Roma Capitale, Teatro di Roma, embassies and cultural institutes, conservatoires and the Libraries of Rome, as well as with major concert organisations and festivals such as RomaEuropa Festival, Concerts at the Quirinal Palace, Accademia Musicale Chigiana, Giovine Orchestra Genovese, Teatro Pubblico Pugliese, Reate Festival, Amiata Piano Festival, Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Nuova Consonanza, Emilia Romagna Festival and the Società Aquilana dei Concerti “B. Barattelli”, among many others. Internationally, it has collaborated with the Italian Cultural Institute in São Paulo and with the German company NetCologne.
Since 2022, Roma Tre Orchestra has collaborated with INPS through the IN musica Per il Sociale protocol, leading to dozens of events at various INPS venues throughout Italy. Since 2024, it has also collaborated with Fondazione Roma, with whom it has developed a project for the city’s peripheral areas and, in 2025, the summer festival La musica è una cosa meravigliosa, in partnership with INPS.
Roma Tre Orchestra has received government support for live performance activities in 2014 and again since 2021, is supported through the Lazio Region’s Fondo Unico dello Spettacolo and is a member of national performing-arts associations including CIDIM, AIAM and Mosaico Musica – Rete Associativa Italiana, whose president is also Roma Tre Orchestra’s Artistic Director.
Since the 2010/11 academic year, it has also run a Music Language Workshop aimed primarily at students of Communication Sciences and Philosophy at Roma Tre University.
