A widespread festival: new and rediscovered venues

For its 30th edition, Elba Isola Musicale d’Europa once again involves all seven municipalities of the island, with two special venues in Marina di Campo and Porto Azzurro: Piazza della Chiesa in Sant’Ilario and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato. Two places of great charm where landscape, history and spirituality intertwine.

For its 30th edition, Elba Isola Musicale d’Europa expands its journey across the island, once again involving all seven municipalities of Elba in this important anniversary year, and reaching two sites of particular historical and landscape value: Piazza della Chiesa in Sant’Ilario in Campo and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato in Porto Azzurro.

The Festival’s presence in Sant’Ilario in Campo marks a return after 25 years: it was in 2001 that this place hosted a concert dedicated to the composer Giuseppe Pietri, who was born in Sant’Ilario. At the heart of the medieval village and set within the ancient Pisan fortifications, Piazza della Chiesa opens onto a landscape that stretches from the Gulf of Marina di Campo to the more distant islands. Here, on September 2, clarinettist Pierre Génisson, together with the Festival Soloists, will present a programme of particular charm, pairing Brahms’s Quintet for clarinet and strings with pieces from the klezmer tradition.

A new destination for the Festival is the Sanctuary of the Madonna diMonserrato, one of the most evocative places on the Island of Elba, perched among cypress trees and Mediterranean scrub, overlooking the valley below. Built in 1606 as an ex-voto offering, it still retains a secluded and contemplative atmosphere, suspended between nature and spirituality. In this setting, on September 11 at 11:00 a.m., Mario Brunello will give a solo cello recital featuring music by Bach and Casarrubios, preceded by a hike shared with the audience, in an experience that unites listening and landscape.

With these two stops, the 30th edition of the Festival strengthens its connection with the entire Elba territory, reaffirming a core aspect of its identity: giving music a widespread dimension that, in a rare and precious way, embraces all seven municipalities of the island.
